Does the Treatment Hurt?
No. During the treatment, you will feel a mild warming feeling, sometimes all over the body. If there are tight muscles, you may feel them relaxing. People with emphysema often feel like they carry a weight on their chest. During the treatment, they often report, " I feel like a weight is lifting off my chest!" The treatment is so relaxing, some people fall asleep and some snore! Does Insurance cover the program? Sometimes, but not usually. United Health Care and Blue Cross Blue Shield have given reimbursement for some people in the past. Those "lucky" or "persistent" people reported that they submitted their receipts along with a detailed letter requesting reimbursement. Insurance does not usually cover our program because this is considered to be "alternative medicine", i.e., "medicine" without the use of drugs and surgery. Does this treatment help with depression?

Yes, Many people have used our program for their addiction to alcohol. Some have even used our treatments secretly (without our knowing) to stop drinking ! Comparing Our Program To Others This program was first introduced to the public in 1990, a time when smoking was still popular. The nicotine patch was introduced in 1992 at by Dr. Rhodes with Duke University, with a success rate of only about 20 percent; ours proved an 80% success rate at that time. (See the 1995 Study comparing the two Programs by searching on Google.) These 2 program were “Pioneers” of their times. One provided a product only and the other provided counseling, ear stimulation treatments and on-going support.
Ear Acupuncture: This treatment is most similar to auricular therapy* (see above) , using needles instead of electrical stimulation. Treatment is invasive, due to needles breaking the skin. Due to mild bleeding, care needs to be taken to prevent transference of blood; i.e., concerns with hepatitis, HIV, etc. Effectiveness of this treatment increases when counseling is included. Ear Laser Treatment: This treatment is also similar to Ear Acupuncture (without the use of needles). Treatment is non-invasive. Effectiveness of this treatment increases when counseling is included. ( At The STOP Clinic, we have used the Laser in the past for treatment, but have better results with the electrical stimulation method.)
The "SHOT": Invasive treatment of (3) injections of "powerful drugs", administered behind both ears and sometimes in the buttocks or arm. This strong medication causes extreme drowsiness and often vomiting for up to 3 days. Some have experienced allergic reactions to "the shot" and were hospitalized for up to 8 weeks. Most providers require another 2 weeks of medications after the initial "shot". Because of the danger associated with this treatment, it is usually administered in a hospital setting, near an emergency room. Those with heart related problems, pregnant, or on medications are usually denied this treatment. Nicotine Patch: Nicotine replacement therapy often delivers more nicotine into the bloodstream than you would receive if you were smoking. If you smoke less than a pack a day, the patch may deliver too much nicotine into the bloodstream and cause an allergic reaction and sickness. The patch can help eliminate the habit of the hand to mouth motion for the more habitual smokers. Use of the patch can cause severe night sweats and nightmares. Success rate is less than 20 percent (Based on results of Duke University's study comparing The STOP Clinic's program to the nicotine patch, 1995.) Nicorette Gum: Nicotine replacement therapy sometimes causes a person to trade one addiction for another. This gum is highly addictive. (We have given treatments to people who have been addicted to the gum for more than 12 years !) Nicotine Lozenges: This nicotine replacement therapy is not as addictive as the nicorette gum. Using this just provides another form of nicotine delivery. Zyban (aka Welbutrin): If you are not used to taking an antidepressant, this prescribed medication may cause headaches, dizziness, a feeling of out of sorts and drugged. For some, side affects have been depression and suicidal tendencies. Chantix, NicVax, etc.: Some of the newest drugs for stopping smoking and are not recommended for children under the age of 18, or if you are "alergic to anything in it", according to the information phamphlets enclosed in the prescription package. You should also avoid Chantix if you are on insulin, ashtma medications, blood thinners, have kidney problems, are pregnant, or hope to be pregnant, or are breast feeding. Possible side effects are nausea, constipation, gas and vomiting. "Cold Turkey": Admirable approach to stop smoking, but not necessary. Some people are more addicted to nicotine than others. Some people, simply, have a long term habit and are not necessarily addicted to the nicotine. (Just like alcohol; not everyone who drinks is addicted to alcohol.) These people wake up one day and declare to never smoke again! This, however, is not the normal reaction to nicotine addiction. Most people seek help to deal with the nicotine cravings and withdrawals.
